A New Probiotic That Could Protect Corals Has Been Discovered
“Scientists from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History have discovered the first effective bacterial probiotic capable of treating and staving off stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD)” (Smithsonian, 2023)
At least 20 species of so-called hard corals are affected by stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD), and these corals are vital for protecting coasts from storm damage and serving as vital habitats for countless fish and marine animals with economic and intrinsic significance. SCTLD instances have been documented in at least 20 nations since they were first identified in Florida in 2014. Although the exact source of the disease is still unknown, once a coral becomes affected, its colony of polyps can quickly perish.
