Introduction

Probiotics are living microorganisms that provide health advantages to the host. They have received considerable interest recently due to their potential medical uses in many health conditions. Probiotics can offer additional benefits to individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI) beyond improving gastrointestinal health. They influence reducing inflammation, enhancing skin health, and promoting neuron regeneration. This article explores several types of microorganisms renowned for their beneficial properties, including bacteria, fungi, and yeasts. It examines the many benefits that have been investigated, highlights noteworthy metabolites, and explores the possibility of probiotics in mitigating difficulties such as bed sores and nerve damage linked to spinal cord injuries (SCI).

Many of the microbes mentioned below have been more deeply analyzed in previous articles, some for different benefits. A common theme in SCI is inflammation. Chronic inflammation in various parts of the body is often associated with almost all health issues, including arthritis, diabetes, obesity, periodontal disease, heart disease, and neurocognitive disorders. Diet greatly affects inflammation. Sugar is the primary food source in virtually any food associated with inflammation (carbohydrates, processed foods, etc.). Luckily, fermented foods are low in sugar and are not considered processed foods. In order to get the full benefits of probiotics, a healthy diet where processed foods are avoided and whole foods low in carbohydrates, including fermented foods, are consumed daily.

Microorganisms Recognized for Several Benefits

Bacteria

Lactobacillus rhamnosus is a type of bacteria well-known for its ability to reduce inflammation. It has also been proven to regulate immune responses and improve the function of the gut barrier. This is particularly important for patients with spinal cord injuries (SCI), as they commonly experience an imbalance of gut bacteria and widespread inflammation throughout the body.

Bifidobacterium longum: This microorganism is well-known for its capacity to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress. It has been linked to enhanced intestinal permeability and decreases in pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Lactobacillus plantarum is known for improving the health of the mucosal lining and antimicrobial peptides. This bacterium can help keep the gut microbiota balanced and protect against infections.
